Say that it’s mere “brotherhood” or “friendship” if you will. But when the Bad Thing (sob) happens at the end of X-Men: First Class, Erik doesn’t respond exactly like a buddy. He passionately drops 500 missiles, clutches Charles to his chest, homicidally freaks out at everyone else on the beach and then basically proposes marriage (“I want you by my side”)—all while looking like he wants to kill himself.

 #charles accesses this corner of erik’s memory system and he cries with erik but he doesn’t cry for the SAME reason as erik #erik cries because he misses the love of his dear sweet mother and the channukahs they used to spend together #but charles cries because he never had the proper love of a mother and when he sees the look in mrs lensherr’s eyes that pride in her son it tears him apart because he spent his ENTIRE childhood trying to get that look out of his mother and he never got it #and when she died he cried at the funeral along with the other guests but while the other guests mourned the loss of a loved one charles mourned the fact that he was never able to make her look at him the way he sees erik’s mother looking at her son #it’s followed him his entire life and it’s an integral part of why he tries to be such a father to his x-men
